A scientist viralized a slice of chorizo and said it was a star

In the digital universe anything can happen! Last Sunday a publication circulated on Twitter that surprised more than one.

It turns out that Etienne Klein, Research Director at the CEA -France’s Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission- explained in one of his tweets that the image came from the James Webb Space Telescope.

The expert announced that it was one of the closest stars to the sun!

As can be seen, the photograph has a black background and reddish tones predominate in the center. The image that appears to be real is not!

The truth is that the publication was massively shared by various digital media. It amassed more than 1,334 retweets and more than 10,000 likes.

“Photo of Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the Sun, located 4.2 light years from us. It was taken over by the JWST. What a level of detail… A new world is revealed day after day”Klein wrote on Twitter.

After the scandal, the Frenchman apologized and confessed that he did it with the aim of “incite prudence” about the images that circulate in networks. Given the fact, criticism invaded social networks since the chosen method was not the most successful.

“I was surprised by the extent of the spread: I thought the image would immediately be detected as fake. And when I saw a top BFMTV journalist getting excited about it and he risking spreading it, I told him it was a joke. He took it with a lot of humor, ”Klein told the AFP agency.

And he emphasized the following: “A hoax has an educational value. It talks about our ability to be deceived, it questions our relationship with the sources”.

Given the uncertainty, the expert provided details and reported the reasons that led him to make that publication.

“I have just apologized to those who have been scandalized by my farce, which had nothing original. I only wanted to encourage prudence regarding the images that seem to speak for themselves”physicist Etienne Klein tweeted on Wednesday.
