A house that defies all conceptions of design in small spaces

Design in small spaces is a challenge for architects around the world that is becoming more and more necessary due to the difficulties that exist in acquiring a house of one’s own and, at the same time, with large dimensions.

That’s why students at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany, presented a design for a very small house that can also be used as a mobile research studio. The proposal presented was part of a project in the Department of Design and Building of the Faculty of Architecture.

The shelter, called “Spirit Shelter” (“Shelter for the spirit”), is made up of two parts: a research section and another destined to meditate, self-explore and carry out daily activities.

This is because the architect who designed it, Allergutendinge, was inspired by Arcadia, a region in ancient Greece that became the name of an imaginary country, representing the idea of an emotional refuge to live in harmony with oneself and nature.

The openings in the roof and front of the house allow the researcher to examine the nature that surrounds him and merge, at the same time, with the habitat he is studying.

Due to its modular wooden construction, the research station is easy to transport, assemble and disassemble in any landscape, allowing its inhabitants to go in search of their own personal “Arcadia”.

Although it is very small, like other houses, its interior will surprise you. At just ten square feet, it can comfortably work, eat and sleep two people. In addition, it has an entrance hall, combined with a kitchen-dining room; and a bed located on an upper platform, creating a small functional separation in the space.
