If honey is part of your diet, it is possible that you already know many of its properties and the importance of preserving it well, which is why here are some tricks that can help you consume honey in the best conditions.
1. Always keep it in glass containers
Glass containers are the right place to keep it, since it will not be impregnated with odors or attract insects, it is also recommended to always use a lid.
2. Suitable temperature
Honey should never be refrigerated, nor should it be stored near the stove or refrigerator, as it could suffer constant changes in temperature and this affects the quality of the honey. It is recommended to store it in places where it does not receive direct sunlight.
What if it is very hot?
Temperature changes will damage the quality of honey, alter its color, texture and flavor. If the degrees in the environment are high, try to leave it in a shady place but not closed. If not, keeping it somewhere in the house with air conditioning is another option.
3. Close the bottle well
It is important that the oxygen only touches it when you are going to use it, otherwise, its flavor will lose potency. A spiral cap is an excellent choice.
4. It is possible to freeze it
There is a huge difference between refrigerating and freezing. Running the former will completely ruin it, but running the latter will only preserve it.
If you have a considerable amount of honey and are afraid it will spoil, freezing it is a good option. It is possible to freeze it without losing its properties, but keep in mind that honey tends to expand when it is at a very low temperature, so avoid filling the jar too much. To thaw it, use the well-known bain-marie method, since it is not recommended to wait for it to thaw at room temperature.
5. Honey, is it not damaged?
True honey without additives lasts for years and even “forever”, of course the ideal is not to wait 50 years to consume it. On the other hand, it is essential that you verify what kind you are acquiring, because if it contains dyes, sugars or any other substance to preserve it, it probably will not last as long and, furthermore, it will not provide your body with the nutrients you expect.
