For many people, dark circles are a real problem: the darkening of the area under the eyes is so unpleasant that they do not go outside without hiding it with makeup and cosmetics. In addition, although it may seem more of an aesthetic inconvenience, it can be a symptom of some imbalances in the body.
In this article, you will learn what the most common causes of dark circles are, and some tricks to combat them.
What are dark circles?
The darkness under the eyes, which we know as dark circles, is actually accumulated blood that can be seen behind the thin skin of that part of the face. The anatomy of this area helps to make the blood in the fine capillaries visible, accentuating it when the skin is particularly thin or when small clots form.
Very pronounced dark circles can be due to different causes:
- genetic predisposition. Some people have thinner skin than others, and in those cases it is easier to see through it the small veins.
- Anemia. The lack of iron contributes to the formation of dark circles under the eyes because it produces poor oxygenation of the tissues, in addition to contributing to the formation of clots in the blood vessels near the eyes.
- slimming. The loss of fat volume in the face, particularly in the area surrounding the eyeballs, causes the darkening of the furrow, the pigmentation of the area and the laxity of the eyelid.
- Lack of sleep. Tiredness dilates blood vessels making them more visible.
- Age. With aging, the skin thins, becoming more transparent.
Many times, dark circles are confused with bags under the eyes. Many cosmetic products promise to reduce bags and dark circles as if they were the same thing. However, they must be distinguished. The bags consist of the fall or inflammation of the area, caused by various factors such as fluid retention or loss of muscle tone.
5 tricks against dark circles
1. Refresh the eyes with fruit
Place two slices of kiwi or green apple, one on each eye, for 20 minutes. Before doing so, put the fruit in the refrigerator, because the cold will help, especially if you also have bags.
You can also place a cotton pad soaked in cold chamomile solution. In that case, it is better if you leave it on overnight.
2. Place potato slices
Placing a slice of potato for 20 minutes each day on each eye while you rest is a very traditional remedy against dark circles.
3. Homemade serum
To make an effective toner against dark circles, mix:
- 1/2 glass of wheat germ oil
- 1/2 glass of peach oil
- 50 grams of lanolin
Heat the lanolin in a bain-marie and then add the oils. Then apply it every night to the dark circles area.
4. Sleep on your back
As dark circles are caused by the accumulation of blood, you have to maintain good circulation, and make sure that the blood does not go towards them. Sleeping on your stomach makes the problem worse. On the other hand, sleeping on your back and with pillows improves it.
5. Castor oil or almond oil
Applying any of these oils daily to dark circles before bed can also be an effective solution that shows changes within two weeks.
How to avoid them
So that the annoying dark circles diminish over time and do not appear again, keep these tips in mind:
- Consume more foods with vitamin K, as it helps firm the capillary walls. You can find it in parsley, spinach, lettuce and, to a lesser extent, in kiwi.
- Avoid excesses (salt, alcohol, cigarette).
- Get enough sleep each day to feel rested.
- Avoid rubbing your eyes.
- Eat well and control your iron levels. If you suspect that you have anemia or that you are underweight, consult your doctor or nutritionist.
