34. Map of how the 1948 Arab-Israeli war helped make Israel’s borders

Many of the maps show the territory of Israel from the 1967 Arab-Israeli war to the present, but this map shows the territory from 1947 and the founding of the country onwards. The leftmost map shows, in blue, Israel established in the United Nations resolution in 1947. The red shows the initial Arab state, the green is the Arab state after the 1949 armistice.

The central map shows the first months of the 1948 Arab-Israeli war and the advance of Arab armies to retake what they saw as their rightful Arab lands. The far right of the map shows the advance of Israel’s armies in the second half of that war. At the end of the fighting, Israel occupied much of what is considered the land of Israel today.
