Indignation, that human feeling that generates a huge dose of rage and anger, is more present than ever in today’s world. The simple observation of many world news, rulers, justice, and also situations in the world of work, often outrage; others disappoint or frustrate.
It is important to understand that all of these terms have different meanings. By definition, indignation stems from an act that the person considers unfair and, therefore, arouses intense emotional reactions that often become uncontrollable. This extends to the group that surrounds it, for example, in the case of a joint cause.
As a basic emotion, it brings with it anger, that response that appears when we feel threatened by something or someone that -actually or potentially- could affect our purposes or interests.
When manifesting, the person feels a great internal anguish in addition to anger, anger, the desire to take justice into their own hands, and to apply the famous “eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth”.
What happens when that anger is awakened is that the person is faced with an offensive act in aspects that are relevant in their personal or professional life, and reacts against what makes their cause the target, seeking to end it, or to reverse those actions. measures that cause indignation, and thus feel that what we can call the achievement that that human being longs for as fair has been restored.
Characteristics of outrage
In the manifestation of this emotion, one can recognize anger, vehemence, outbursts in various ways, and an intense internal feeling that things have gotten off their axis, and that, if immediate action is not taken, it cannot be repaired. that the person perceives as a threat.
From the point of view of the structure of indignation within human beings, it is a sequence of multiple very complex thoughts, crossed in all cases by the judgments, prejudices, life experiences and visions of the world that each one has. . That is to say that what outrages some, does not represent a threat to others.
What makes indignation so virulence and powerful when it manifests itself is that, through it, the personal assessment of the facts is projected. In this case, an assessment that we could define as negative, enhanced by the feeling that what happens (the event itself) constitutes a grievance, an affront, tarnishes the honor of someone or something.
All of this, combined, is cooked in a large pressure cooker with its lid poorly fitted, until it explodes and causes a colossal overflow.
outburst of dignity
Injustice appears when the person feels that human dignity is being taken away. This means that, having existed a certain form of things -for example, an acquired right at work, a benefit, a state of satisfaction of the person in a certain aspect of his life-, when that no longer exists, it is extinguished, or else, it is lost by some fact, this uncontrollable emotion breaks out.
This is how the person feels powerless in the face of what is happening, and attributes it in every possible way to another (person or entity) who is to blame for their unjust reality, because they internally determine that what has been taken away, taken away or confiscated. that he feels that it belongs to him, that it is his own and that he is not willing to give it up.
In social movements and events that impact a society, indignation is also a generator of collective empathy, the ability for a huge group of people to join a cause based on the actions of one person. This is the case of injustice in judicial rulings, tremendous events that occur, or bloody measures that companies usually take.
From a worldview of one’s own ideas, people’s inflexible belief patterns and paradigms also cause outrage, since, not being able to understand situations from a place of reflection and analysis, nor having the ability to understand the other as one another, their impotence increases and there is an explosion.
3 Resources to Overcome Outrage and Injustice
Regardless of the facts themselves, the management of emotions is essential to preserve not only the physical but also the mental health of people. There are situations that are suffered in such a way and with such intensity that, if they are not resignified in some constructive way, they literally end up destroying the person, because the burden of feeling of injustice that they suffer is such that it ends up eating them up inside.
In this aspect, it is essential to consult with psychologists and psychiatrists, who are the specialists to help in the process. As a first palliative, without covering the emotions, without hiding them, it is important to channel it in some specific ways:
1. Work on building resentment
Let’s divide, let’s deconstruct this word: re / feeling / ment = to feel the lie again. As indignation is based on the feeling that this fact is contrary to what the person considers fair, it is important to channel the ruminant thought of “they make me / they made me”, to empower that sentient being, and accompany him in the internal reconstruction you need. This will strengthen him and allow him to act more assertively in the face of what he must process. At this point, the activation of the internal key to resignify the meaning of life is resilience, the human capacity to overcome enormous challenges.
2. Help decompress emotions, elaborating the possible desire to take revenge and revenge
Human emotions trigger a multitude of manifestations. In this case, if we continue to add what we call negative, the share of pain, sorrow, resentment and any other feeling that appears in the conscious or unconscious level will increase. Here it is key to enhance the internal strength of the person, and not his weaknesses.
3. Contribute to avoiding resignation, supporting in giving a new meaning to indignation
I have worked with people who have been victims of injustice for various reasons, and what I share here is part of those real experiences. When that being who suffers and is anguished falls into resignation, the person abandons himself and enters into a nonsense of life. His hope, enthusiasm and energy to sustain the routine is so overwhelmed by the indignation he feels that he has no more strength to continue.
Here it is convenient to propose realistic and possible scenarios so that -along with working internally- the person can gradually recover the meaning of his life, and even of that experience. I know several examples that did manage to do it with a lot of effort and dedication on their part, and transmuted the negative into works that emerged from the remains that their lives had become.
As we can see, the feeling of pain will remain, the traces of impotence remain and, with a long time of elaboration and adequate containment, a new stage of indignation will give way: that of finding a certain meaning of one’s own from that experience. Perhaps, in many cases, this will result in something superior and enriching for the whole society, as in those people with whom I had the honor to accompany and learn from their strength when they went through cases of indignation and extreme injustice. And they came out. And here they are doing what they have to do on a day-to-day basis. Back with life.
