Shigeaki Hinohara was a Japanese doctor born in 1911 who passed away in July of this year, shortly before his 106th birthday.
In addition to practicing medicine, he wrote more than a hundred books, all of them on health and good living. He also founded the “elderly movement for a full and happy life in adulthood.”
Among all his wisdom and his great legacy, he left these 12 tips to live longer and better:
1. Climb the stairs
Shigeaki Hinohara, until his last days, never took the elevator. She always climbed the stairs, even “two by two to strengthen her muscles.” Also, she says that you should always carry your own things, instead of expecting others to do it for you.
In short, Shigeaki Hinohara recommends not taking shortcuts.
2. Stay busy
According to this doctor, the key to longevity is to always stay active and busy, with a well-filled agenda. Above all, he emphasizes planning: think about what you will do 5 years from now.
3. Keep working
According to Shigeaki Hinohara, if you do what you love, you should never stop working. And if he has to, it must be well past the age of 65. Since, when you are passionate about work, it gives meaning to life.
4. Keep contributing to society
Beyond working at something you like, Shigeaki Hinohara’s other piece of advice is to try harder and harder to contribute to society. For example, doing community work.
5. Eat well
Food is the basis of everything. For this Japanese doctor, eating healthy and staying away from being overweight was essential.
That’s why I ate sparingly for breakfast, light lunches and healthy dinners.
6. Do not resort only to science
Despite being a doctor, Shigeaki Hinohara did not believe that science was the cure in all cases. In his opinion, many times the cure for diseases is achieved through music, or animal therapy.
7. Stay away from materialism
“After all, we don’t take anything from here,” said Shigeaki Hinohara. For him, what is truly important is what you can give and learn, much more than what can be bought.
8. Fun also heals
Just as children sometimes forget that something hurts when they play, the same can happen with adults. Shigeaki Hinohara was one of the pioneers in working on health from the state of mind, with alternative therapies to pain.
Having fun and enjoying yourself is a good way to have a healthy heart and body.
9. Sign in
Everyone has their heroes and people they look up to. Discover people whose values identify you. Find heroes to inspire you, from your parents to Mahatma Gandi.
10. Share what you know
All that you have managed to learn, share it. “I give 150 lectures a year. Normally I speak for an hour, an hour and a half, standing up, to be strong, “said Shigeaki Hinohara.
11. Don’t worry so much
Life is full of unexpected good and bad. Things, even the worst, happen. Shigeaki Hinohara was kidnapped for a few days by the communist army at the age of 59. Faced with this extreme situation, he discovered firsthand how the body gets used to even the worst things.
For those, he suggested that you don’t have to worry about everything, and take dimension of things.
12. Always have a childlike attitude
The obligations that come from the imposition of time are, according to Shigeaki Hinohara, the worst. Therefore, his last piece of advice is to maintain a childlike attitude at all times.
When you were little, if you were having a good time, you might forget to eat or sleep. But you let yourself be carried away by your instincts, by what made you happy, and not by what was imposed. Managing to maintain that attitude in adulthood is the key to living longer and better.
