The hiatus It occurs when a word has two contiguous vowels that belong to different syllables. For example: raiz,dí-a,zoh-logical.
A hiatus can occur in the following cases:
- accentual hiatus. It is formed with a tonic closed vowel (í, ú) and an open unstressed vowel (a, e, or), in any of its combinations. For example: fi-lo-so-fí-aegI heards-mo, pais.
- simple vowel hiatus. It is formed with two different open vowels (a, eo), in any of its combinations. For example: abs-traer rhey-li-zar, phey-ta.
- sound repetition vowel hiatus. It is formed with two equal unstressed vowels (aa, ee, ii, oo, uu). For example: coh-pe-rar, leer, chii-ta.
To keep in mind: Words with accentual hiatus do not follow the traditional accentuation rules. When there is an open vowel hiatus (to, and, or) together with stressed close vowel (í, ú), the latter has a tilde, regardless of whether the word is acute, flat or esdrújula. For example: maiz,la-ud, vi-ví-a-mos, ga-rú-a.
The hiatus is opposed to the diphthong, which is the phenomenon that occurs when two contiguous vowels belong to the same syllable. For example: ouch-to-mobile, mi.e.-docwow-dad.
Likewise, it differs from the triphthong, which is the conjunction of three vowel sounds in the same syllable. For example: bowyU-ru-goopsviei-ras.
Remember: When the letter H appears between two vowels, it does not interfere with the formation of hiatuses or diphthongs. In hiatuses, the word is divided equally and the H remains attached to the second vowel. For example: al-co-hol,bu-hore-heno.
