10 Latin American landscapes that look like other planets

Perhaps at some time you wanted to feel like you were on another planet: to have the experience of getting away from everything you know and seeing with your own eyes a natural scene that you had never imagined.

Although that is not possible, there are many places in our world, some of them highly exploited by tourists and others that few people know about, that seem to come from a different planet or from science fiction. Many times, those incredible places are closer than we think. Here you can see 10 of them, all in Latin America.

1. Morning Sun – Bolivia

The Sol de Mañana Geysers, which are inside the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve, in southern Bolivia, very close to the border with Peru, are so named because the best time of day to visit them is dawn, when the The difference in temperature between night and day in the desert causes the water vapor trapped between the rocks to rise to the surface. The variety of colors on the ground and in the water, along with the spectacle of the geysers, is difficult to compare with any other place on the planet.

2. Atacama Geysers – Chile

Like those of Bolivia, the Geysers of the Atacama Desert, in Chile, offer an incredible show at dawn. When the underground waters, which at night remained almost frozen, begin to receive the heat of the day, the pressure is too strong, and they burst from the cracks in the ground, rising in huge fumaratas.

3. Death Valley – Chile

Although the geysers are the main attraction of San Pedro de Atacama, in Chile, in the surroundings of that small town there are an infinity of landscapes that are extremely different from each other and different from what can be found anywhere on the planet.

This Martian-like landscape is Death Valley; and it is not as popular as the Valley of the Moon or the salt lakes, which are also impressive and are very close to it.

4. Basement of the Swallows – Mexico

The Sótano de las Golondrinas is a natural abyss formed in Mexico by the erosion of water over millions of years in a limestone soil. It is the natural refuge of various species of birds, it is located in San Luis de Potosí and at certain times of the day it becomes even more attractive, when the sunlight bathes the canyon and changes its colors.

5. Huacachina Oasis – Peru

The Huacachina desert is an incredible place, and the best of all is the oasis near the lagoon, where life and vegetation emerge as if there were no desert around it.

6. Uyuni Salt Flat – Bolivia

The Salar de Uyuni is one of the most well-known beauties on the continent, but even if we visited it a hundred times we would find things that would surprise us, such as the shapes adopted by the mounds of accumulated salt or the small lakes that form with the rain.

7. Black Lagoon of Catamarca – Argentina

In the north of Argentina there are many surprising landscapes, but some are much less known than others, such as the Laguna Negra, in the province of Catamarca, a place where fauna and flora that are difficult to find coexist.

8. Hornocal – Argentina

The Hornocal is another of the attractions of northern Argentina, and although for those who visit that region the Hill of 7 colors is more popular, this mountain has fourteen!

9. Atacama Salt Flat

There are not many salt flats in the world, and it is no coincidence that most of them are in South America, since three conditions must be met for their formation: the material contribution, which can come from volcanoes, for example; the water, which has to reach a basin with little outlet and disconnected from the sea; and that the climate is arid, with a level of evaporation much higher than that of the water contributions that reach the area. The Salar de Atacama is one of the most beautiful.

10. Lighthouse at the end of the world – Argentina

The rocks at the end of the world may indeed look like they belong to our planet, but surely the sensation of being at the end of the southernmost city in the world is quite comparable to that of moving away towards a point outside the Earth.

Which of them would you like to visit?
