A monograph It is a document written by one or several authors, which deals with a specific topic, for which it collects relevant information from various reliable sources. The monograph is the genre most used for the presentation of research, reflections and academic work in general.
Despite dealing with a single topic, in a monograph the topic is approached from different points of view, trying to exhaust it as much as possible and providing the greatest amount of information to the readers. In addition, reflections and specific considerations of the author are included, which are usually linked to his particular interests, his cultural tradition and his personal perspectives.
A monograph, then, must be a systematic, complete and relatively extensive work that represents a contribution to the subject in question, and must also be attached to a defined and rigorous research methodology.
Parts of a monograph
A monograph can contain as many sections as desired, but the traditional structure of a monographic text is usually made up of:
- Resume. Many monographs, and even many scholarly articles, are preceded by an abstract, which provides the reader with a quick overview of the content of the text, often accompanied by keywords that identify the main themes.
- Introduction. It is a kind of chapter zero, in which the reader is offered the conceptual tools to address the subject of the investigation, that is, so that he knows its context and has the necessary ideas to delve into the text and understand it. You can also provide relevant methodological or bibliographic information before development begins.
- Developing. It is the main body of the monographic work, its most extensive part, and it is the section in which the research topic is fully addressed from different angles, trying to cover it as much as possible and in an organized manner. It is here where the author’s position on the subject being addressed and the relevance of the research are justified.
- conclusions. It is the closure of the investigation, where the reader is offered the possible answers found after having delved into the subject. It should work as a summary, but also provide a final perspective, which will be the one that leaves its mark on the reader once the explanation of reasons, interpretations and final arguments is finished.
- Bibliography. In this section, the bibliographical references are presented and the list of consulted texts, cited authors and all the reference material that has served as support for the investigation is displayed. This is an important section, as it gives the reader the opportunity to learn more about the subject or to go to the original sources of many of the ideas cited in the document.
- Annexes. In this final section, all the graphic, photographic or illustrative material (tables, charts, illustrations, graphs, etc.) that was mentioned during development and requires more space to fully unfold and be interpreted comfortably is offered. They usually appear numbered and classified, so that they can be easily referred to in the text.
