10 Examples of Development Paragraphs

The development paragraphs They are those paragraphs in which the main ideas of the topic of a text are mentioned and explained. These paragraphs are used in different types of texts, both from the academic environment and from the journalistic environment, and they form the body of a text, which is after the introduction and before the conclusion.

A paragraph is a unit of text that is made up of one or more sentences, beginning with a capital letter and ending with a full stop. The texts are organized in such a way that each paragraph deals with a central idea from which secondary ideas emerge.

Generally, the first sentence of each development paragraph tends to make explicit what is the main point that will be explained or described. There are different development paragraphs:

  • of enumeration. The main idea is stated and then the characteristics of that idea in the form of a list.
  • of sequence. Different elements are mentioned in a spatial or temporal order and numbers or letters are often used to make the order explicit.
  • compare or contrast. Two or more items are compared.
  • of concepts. The main idea is stated and then clarifications, arguments, quotes and examples that develop the main idea are included.
  • Of solving a problem. It has two parts: the first one states the problem and the second one presents the solution.
  • cause-effect. An event or fact is stated and then its causes are explained.

Examples of development paragraphs

  1. The advertising campaign of the soft drink brand consists of three strategies: print advertising, since advertisements were included in magazines and newspapers; outdoor advertising, since billboards and billboards were included on public roads; and television commercials, since commercials were included in prime time.
