10 characteristics that differentiate true friends

The years and experience are responsible for showing us all that some relationships are good for us, while others are not so good. It can happen both in love, as in friendship, or in any other type of relationship.

That a person does not help us at this time in our lives does not mean that they are bad or toxic in themselves, nor that we should fight and walk away forever. But many times, putting distance at a time when two people are not helping each other is necessary.

How is a healthy friendship different from a toxic relationship? There is no magic formula or exact description that can always be applied. It’s usually your intuition and the way you feel when you’re around someone that indicates whether or not the relationship is good for you. But there are some characteristics that can help distinguish good friendships.

1. Good friends come up with ideas to celebrate your achievements, and are not jealous or envious of your victories.

2. Good friends accept that you spend time alone, and they are happy when you fall in love, spend time with your family or with another friend. They are not jealous or want to take up all your time.

3. Good friends can exchange opinions and also accept that there are things that they will never agree on. They never seek to force you to think like them.

4. Good friends always respect you, even when they are angry.

5. Good friends praise you when they think you’re doing things right, and try to help you when you’re wrong. But they don’t criticize you in a hurtful way or abandon you when they think you’re not doing things right.

6. Good friends trust your word, they don’t constantly doubt or ask for proof. And if they want to know something about you they ask you directly, they never go behind or create gossip.

7. Good friends always call you to check on you, not just when they need help.

8. Good friends understand when you need to be quiet, they don’t get mad if you don’t want to go out or aren’t in the mood to talk.
